One of the hallmarks of an authentic science experience is engaging in authentic science; observing the world around you, collecting data, then forming conclusions based on the analysis of this data. Many classrooms spend the bulk of their inquiry time collecting this elusive data. The pursuit of true “open-ended” inquiry becomes much easier if students are able to collect real world data in a timely fashion. Imagine a classroom where students are encouraged to ask scientific questions, to collect data in numerous ways, and to communicate their findings using modern technology. Probeware is an amazing tool that allows learners to spend less time collecting data, and more time on the process of inquiry. We will specifically look at these ideas as it relates to the high school science classroom.
