With wit, honesty, and keen observation, Love in the Big City explores love, queer identity, friendship, family, and belonging against the vibrant backdrop of contemporary Seoul. His internationally celebrated novel Love in the Big City has reached readers around the world through translation and has also been adapted for both film and television.
In this conversation, Park will share insights into his writing and creative process, the people and places that inspire his fiction, and the experiences of seeing stories rooted in contemporary Korea travel across languages, cultures, and forms.
The discussion will also explore the growing international presence of Korean literature and the role of translation in bringing Korean voices to readers around the world. The program will include a conversation with the author, followed by an audience Q&A.
Author, Sang Young Park is one of the most distinctive and celebrated voices in contemporary Korean literature. He was longlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2022 and is a recipient of the prestigious Young Writers' Award. Known for his witty, honest, and poignant storytelling, his internationally acclaimed novel Love in the Big City has reached global audiences through translation and adaptations for both film and television.
Moderator, Dr. Ho-Jung Choi is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC). His teaching and academic interests encompass Korean language and culture, bringing rich scholarly insight and engaging perspectives to contemporary Korean narratives and cross-cultural discourse.
