A story about the ultimate triumph of the human spirit. Paul Zindel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, is an inspiring look at how hope can bloom in the most challenging environments.
The story centers on Tillie, a quiet teenager who navigates a chaotic and difficult home life ruled by her eccentric, embittered mother, Beatrice. While her surroundings are bleak and unpredictable, Tillie finds a sanctuary of wonder in the world of science. Encouraged by her teacher, she embarks on a fascinating school project: raising marigold seeds that have been exposed to radiation.
As Tillie’s experiment advances to the school science fair finals, her flowers become a striking metaphor for her own life - while some seeds wither under harsh conditions, others adapt to create breathtaking, resilient new blooms. In the end, the play delivers a powerful, heartwarming truth: even in the harshest soil, something beautiful can grow.
