It’s been a year since the release of their last scorcher “Let The Night Fall” – an eternity in pop years – though they’ve hardly been idle in that time. In addition to putting the finishing flourishes on their forthcoming fourth full-length album, Toronto-based Dragonette have been busy collaborating with top-flight electronic music producers from across the planet. Their team-up with Swedish hitmakers Galantis, “Peanut Butter Jelly,” has become a bona fide international hit, with over 100 million streams and a number of International Top 10s and Gold & Platinum awards in its wake. A partnership with US beatmaster Big Data has been featured in countless movies and commercials, and their latest pairing with UK’s Philip George, “Feel This Way,” is currently Top 10 on the US Billboard Dance chart after ruling the charts in the UK.
Dragonette are no strangers to adding a heavy dose of emotional complexity to their catchy songs to create a unique blend of pop music, and lead singer Martina Sorbara explains the creation of their new song by stating, “When we started writing ‘Lonely Heart,’ like most songs, we weren’t entirely aware of where it was leading us. But then, slowly, a kind of ‘covert sad song’ started to form. On the surface it’s almost a party tune, but if you follow it more closely it’s quite melancholic. But I think it’s the kind of melancholy that most people enjoy feeling. The kind that keeps you interesting.”
Dragonette have toured around the world on the heels of releasing their rich catalogue and hit collaborations, most famously “Hello” with French DJ Martin Solveig,” touching ground on six continents and once even swinging from Manila to Paris in a single weekend. They have toured the US with the likes of Major Lazer, Duran Duran and Miike Snow, played to a packed mid-day tent at Coachella, and performed far and wide in their native Canada. This summer sees them returning to the Canadian festival stage, at Osheaga Music Festival among many others.
Their decade-long rise from indie dark horse to pop music mainstay has rightly earned Dragonette a place in many hearts, and there is much more to come.
