"We are proud to offer our first comedy. Our first production at Christ Church Cathedral. The first appearance of Bramwell Tovey in an opera. And the first Vancouver re-construction of three operas Mozart began, but never finished", said Janet Lea, President of City Opera.
Two are unfinished Italian comedies, Lo sposo deluso and L'oca del Cairo. The third is Zaïde, a German romance. All have been linked in a new story written by Maria Reva. The music is wonderful, witty, and unique. It is all Mozart, and Mozart you have never heard before. Our reconstruction takes place in the 21st Century.
An Impresario is sitting in a darkened space, considering his next project. To his astonishment, the Gates of Limbo open before him. Out come spirits, lost souls who have been waiting 200 years for Mozart to finish his work. They beg the producer for a chance to be born, and to sing. They have been practicing, and squabbling, and dealing with abandonment issues for two centuries. The Impresario agrees but on one condition.
"The Lost Operas of Mozart is staged, with orchestra and dazzling costumes, in a space that perfectly conjures Limbo", added Lea. It is a comedy that offers zany stories, wonderful characters, Mozart's music, gender politics, and suspense. No one has seen anything like this before.
