Burnaby born and raised Robert Gagno has dedicated most of his life to mastering the art of the pinball machine. He isn’t simply an aficionado of the game, he is one of Canada’s top pinball players and among the very best in the world. Robert also happens to have autism. As a young boy, his parents realized they could give him a quarter and he would play on a pinball machine for hours. Refusing to believe their son was locked into a limited future, his parents supported him as he practiced non-stop, developing an exceptional talent for the game. Wizard Mode is an intimate, personal depiction of Autism, family and dedication. As Robert and his dad travel to pinball competitions across North America, his little tics become more noticeable and the additional challenges he faces become evident. But Gagno’s determination, as well as the love and support of both family and friends, are his secret weapon (DOXA). The film follows Robert as he seeks to balance his quest to become a world pinball champion and his growing real world responsibilities, culminating at the largest pinball tournament in the world, Pinburgh, based in Pittsburgh, PA. Vancouver based filmmakers Nathan Drillot and Jeff Lee Petry have co-directed, shot, written, and produced films under the SALAZAR moniker since 2010. Focusing on documentaries that tell unique stories of individuals whose lives create change within their communities, SALAZAR has had the privilege of filming with world-renowned kinetic artist Theo Jansen, travelled the deep south with IO Tillet Wright shooting over 1500 portraits of LGBTQ Americans for the project ‘Self Evident Truths, told the story of the only Muslim professional sumo wrestler living in Tokyo and even managed to get a Grammy nod for their work for recording artist Tegan and Sara. SALAZAR is proud to be presenting their first feature length film - Wizard Mode.
