Founded in 1981 by conductor Maurice Backun, it was a group of talented wind and percussion players looking for musical challenges that brought the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble (PSWE) into being. Over twenty years later, the ensemble has grown and matured to the point where it takes a leading role in music education in British Columbia and is committed to supporting Canadian composers. Yet the ensemble remains true to its roots – providing its members the chance to get together and play challenging wind music.
