Discover new life in objects you wouldn’t glance twice at in your home. In our exhibition tour of two still life exhibits, ordinary objects like apples, cheese graters, a stack of books, and a lampshade take on surprising significance. Join Jordan Strom, Curator of Exhibitions and Collections, for an informal, behind-the-scenes tour of Mimetic Workshop and Small Stages on Wednesday, November 23 from 7:30 to 9pm.
Our fall exhibits on still life invite you to delve into artists’ homes and studios that highlight the intimate and often unusual relationship we have with objects. In Mimetic Workshop: Studio Still Lifes of Fiona Ackerman & Kelly Lycan, two Vancouver-based artists investigate the intriguing space of the artist studio as well as the materials of artmaking within their own studios through paintings and installation.
Small Stages: Still Life from the Permanent Collection features diverse artworks including paintings, sculpture, and photography depicting carefully arranged—and sometimes unusual—scenes that reflect on and expand the still life genre. You’ll encounter brightly painted art studio scenes, hanging household and garden utensils, a photograph of natural history books, and an interactive wooden sculpture that encourages you to open doors and drawers to make a story out of the objects that act like clues.
Participants will enjoy this friendly and engaging introduction to the fascinating world of contemporary art and how it reflects the world around us. Jordan will share information, stories, and reflections on the artwork in the two exhibits. Both regular tour participants and first-time gallery visitors are encouraged to ask questions and share their responses to the art.
