ANTOINE CHANCE (BELGIQUE)
“Chance” is neither a pseudonym nor the real name of the thirty-year-old singer. The son of a famous Belgian illustrator, Philippe Geluck (“Le Chat”), Antoine Geluck decided to transpose his Flemish surname “Geluck” (meaning “”luck”), into French. Immersed in a cultural environment from his early childhood, he began piano lessons at the age of six and graduated to electric guitar as a young teenager, playing Nirvana classics and photocopying their album jackets to plaster the walls of his room. Today, he admits: “It looked really hideous!”
After his baccalaureate, Antoine set out for the UK to study music in Chichester, Sussex, where he socialised with other musicians and played in bars. Antoine’s pantheon of great pop artists is to this day very British: he admires the fist two albums by Coldplay, as well as Vampire Weekend and the melancholic strains of Bon Iver and Radiohead. On the French side, he is a big fan of Alain Souchon, closely followed by Michel Berger, Camille and JP Nataf, for whom he has opened a show. The next sojourn in his musical training was the Jazz Studio in Antwerp. Enriched by these experiences, Antoine joined forces with fellow musicians to launch the group Coco Royal in 2010, which made a great hit on stage in Belgium and France.
In 2014, surrounded by a top-flight team that had worked with some of the biggest names on the pop music scene (Katerine, Alain Souchon, Vanessa Paradis, etc.), he launched his first solo album, “Fou”. This opus is an extension of the harmonious blend of his France-UK sympathies, connecting the dots between Radiohead and Michel Polnareff, the Innocents and Travis, Daniel Darc and Chris Martin. The album is an impressive collection of songs with artful melodies and refined orchestration, with accents that are reminiscent of David Bowie, as well as sweet and melancholy ballads. The first cut, entitled simply “fou”, a radio favourite, is a perfect illustration of pop music that is beautifully composed and still a good dance tune. With this album, Antoine Chance had the honour of succeeding Stromae in 2015 as artist of the year at the “Octaves de la musique” (the Belgian equivalent of the “Victoires de la musique”).
The whole show is a revelation of the disarming blend of poetry that is at once sober and yet intoxicating, concise and yet emotional, that is a trademark of the simple and resolutely pop lyrics of Antoine Chance.
To get the audience warmed up for this show on a Belgian theme, our own Vancouver troubadour, Joshua Minsky, will open with some of Jacques Brel’s most beautiful songs.
JOSHUA MINSKY (COLOMBIE-BRITANNIQUE)
New York-born, Joshua Minsky grew up in Vancouver. An inveterate traveller, he spent twelve years exploring Europe, guitar in hand, playing jazz, rock, soul or funk according to his mood. By the time of his return here in 1996, he had developed a wide repertoire of classic French songs perfectly suited to his deep seductive voice. Joshua Minsky’s performance on stage is imbued with charisma and world-elegance. Vancouver’s audience enjoyed a sampling of his interpretative talents in November 2002 and November 2015 as part of the Coup de coeur francophone.
Since then Joshua has performed, amongst other, at the concert "T'as voulu voir Vancouver," a tribute to Jacques Brel at the Waterfront Theatre and again in a tribute to Edith Piaf at the Arts Club Theatre. Winner of the Critics Award at the “Pacifique En Chanson” in 2008, he performed at Vancouver’s Diner en blanc in 2013.
Jacques Brel’s musical repertoire will be at the center of his performance on Saturday, November 19th as the opening of the evening “Coup de coeur pour la Belgique”. Join us for an unforgettable early evening with Joshua Minsky and his unique voice!
