About the Artist
Don Hutchinson studied ceramics at at the Vancouver School of Art from his mentors, world-acclaimed potters Robert Weghsteen, Heinz Laffin, and Wayne Ngan. Working mostly with stoneware and earthenware, Hutchinson has transformed from a studio potter making functional ware to a creator of imaginative myths that he presents in his decorative platters and inventive sculptural works. He incorporates the natural environment into his ceramics by sourcing his clay bodies and minerals from the local landscape.
In 1980, Hutchinson won a Canada Council grant to research using raw minerals of BC for glazes. This work led to a publication of a training manual that has been used by ceramic artists across Canada, England, South Africa, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
In 2014, he was named by as a Surrey Civic Treasure, an award that honours and celebrates outstanding contributors to Surrey’s cultural sector.
