The poignant and lyrical Spanish-flavoured mass Misa Criolla by Ramirez and the colourful, potent Romancero Gitano with text by Lorca brilliantly set to music by Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Also included are works by Piazzolla, Victoria and a sumptuous arrangement of Besame Mucho by Velázquez. Olé!
Capilano University Singers is a national and international prize-winning ensemble. The choir is part of the Diploma of Music Program and most of the singers are voice majors. They have a busy schedule with highlights in recent years including the opening concert for the Kelowna Philharmonic Society’s 1992 summer series. In May 1996 it traveled to Quebec as an invited choir performing at the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors’ national convention and to Nelson, BC as the showcase choir at the Nelson Arts Festival. The ensemble also undertakes an annual tour to smaller communities in BC, giving concerts and workshops to community and school groups. The choir had a very successful tour of Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic in 1998 and in May 2000 toured Kracow, Budapest, Prague and Vienna. In May/June 2002 the choir performed in Rothenburg, Salzburg, Venice, Milan, Lucerne and Heidelberg. In May/June 2005, the choir toured Rothenburg, Munich, Salzburg, Prague, Dresden and Wurzburg, singing in many cathedrals and other venues associated with the great composers of the past. The choir was a participant in both the 1992 and 1994 International Choral Kathaumixw festival and was a prize-winner in the contemporary category both years. Capilano University Singers was a national finalist in the prestigious Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Radio Choral Competition in 1992, 1996 and 2002, and won second place in 2000 in the mixed choir category, competing with many university choirs across the country.
Capilano University Festival Chorus sings a wide variety of music from smaller choral gems to large-scale masterpieces and gives several concerts each year. Major works we have performed in the past include Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Bach’s Magnificat, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Brahms’ Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem and Vesperai Solennes de Confessore and Schubert’s Mass in C. The choir may be taken for credit or non-credit.
The Capilano University Wind Ensemble is an auditioned ensemble of approximately 40 musicians that includes the goal of a balanced instrumentation of brass and woodwind players, percussionists, as well as double bass players. The ensemble is comprised primarily of students enrolled in the Diploma in Music Program, Jazz Studies Degree Program and the Music Therapy Degree Program. Students enrolled in other faculties at Capilano University as well as musicians from the community are also invited to audition for positions that are available. This high calibre wind ensemble performs two concerts each year in the Capilano University Performing Arts Theatre in early December and late March, and is available to perform elsewhere at high schools, colleges, universities and music festivals.
