How do we start to choose music for this exciting concert? A good place to start would be to look to our First Nations people whose musical heritage predates the birth of Canada by more than a thousand years. And we shouldn’t forget the first settlers from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland who gave us our Celtic music tradition brought to life lately by the likes of The Great Big Sea, the Rankin Family and Ashley McIsaac. Celtic music also influenced the music of early Quebec, as did the many French settlers of the day. In the mid 20th century the people of Quebec began to identify as Quebeçois and Giles Vigneault wrote the hauntingly beautiful, unofficial anthem of Quebec, Mon Pays.
Now that we are close to our 150th birthday, the music of Canada reflects the diverse and vibrant cultures of people from the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and many other parts of the world. Today, Canada’s music industry is ranked as the sixth largest in the world and has produced many internationally known musicians in every genre. If folk is your favourite type of music you can listen to such Canadians as Stan Rogers, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell. The Canadian jazz scene has produced such great artists as Oscar Peterson and Diana Krall. Rock bands, great classical artists, Japanese taiko drumming, Chinese instrumental ensembles – all have become part of Canada’s musical language, and offer something for everyone.
ROCA’s concert Canada 150: Canada’s Music from Coast to Coast will offer a cross-section of this amazing tapestry. From the joyful energy of Godfrey Ridout’s “Fall Fair” to the plaintive Celtic influences in Loreena McKennitt’s music; from songs of a failing fishery on the east coast, to a cowboy stampede in the west; music to soak in, and music to sing along with – you won’t want to miss this concert!
