In what is a dream come true for my 16-year-old self, Rancid and Dropkick Murphys are hitting the road together this summer. The From Boston To Berkeley Tour commences July 27th in Bangor, ME and includes stops in Dropkick’s hometown of Boston and Rancid’s native Berkeley (hence the tour’s title) as part of the 24-date outing.
According to a press release, each show will culminate with Rancid and Dropkick Murphys “on stage together for a joint encore.”
Rancid:
The roots of Rancid are traceable back to Operation Ivy at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, Ca. circa 1987. After Operation Ivy broke up, Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman went on to form Rancid. In 1993 they signed with long time producer, and label founder Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion and Epitaph, who would stay on with the band for the next 20 years as the bands producer. Rancid (Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen, Matt Freeman, Branden Steineckert) has stayed independent. They have their own independent booking agent, they’re on an independent record label, Hellcat/Epitaph, and they make their own t-shirts. Rancid’s new record Honor Is All We Know is again produced by Brett Gurewitz.
So here it comes everybody, one more time, it's Rancid. See ya in the pit.
Dropkick Murphys:
American Celtic punk band Dropkick Murphys have made a career out of celebrating their Irish heritage through anthemic punk songs rooted in the traditional Irish music they heard as children. During the band’s early days in Boston, they endeared themselves to the city’s notoriously Irish-friendly locals with annual Saint Patrick’s Day concerts – frontman Ken Casey even owns a pub. With their eighth studio album, 2013’s Signed and Sealed in Blood, the band delivered another strong set of bagpipe-laden sing-alongs like “Rose Tattoo” and “The Season’s Upon Us,” landing them at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. The band achieved similar success with 2007 album The Meanest of Times, which peaked at No. 6 – the band’s highest charting album to date. After the local success of their early albums, the band received their first mainstream exposure with No. 1 singles “The State of Massachusetts” and “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” the latter of which was featured in the 2006 Academy Award-winning Boston flick The Departed. On tour in 2013, Dropkick Murphys roused audiences with their highly participatory concerts, treating ticket buyers to live mandolins, bagpipes, and other Celtic instruments.
