As the name suggests, the band plays the music of many great legacy composers such as Rob McConnell, Thad Jones, Count Basie, Bob Florence, etc. The band is formed and run by a young Vancouver-based trumpet player, Michael Kim, and is led by one of Vancouver's most accomplished Arrangers/Composers, Fred Stride. For this concert, the VLJO will be playing two sets of Oliver Nelson’s compositions.
Oliver Nelson was an American Jazz Saxophonist and composer, especially famous for his "The Blues and the Abstract Truth" album. The VLJO will present various selections from many of his compositions in different styles and era.
