The Fraser River Discovery Centre Society established the Fraser River Hall of Fame in 1991, to recognize and honour the many individuals, families, businesses and organizations who have made noteworthy contributions to health and sustainability of the Fraser River, its culture, people, industry and environment.
Constructed in 1894, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery was one of fifteen canneries that once lined the banks of the Fraser River in Steveston. The facility canned salmon until 1930 when it was repurposed as a net loft, fresh fish depot, and later as a herring reduction plant. After operating for 85 years, the facility was designated a national historic site and opened to the public in 1994.
Joining past luminaries such as First Nations leader Wendy Grant (1996), founding FRDC patron Lucille Johnstone (2000), local industry leader Fraser River Pile and Dredge (2006) and found and chair of both BC Rivers Day and World Rivers Day, Mark Angelo (2014), the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society will become the 25th inductee into the Fraser River Hall of Fame.
