Throughout June, City Hall Plaza will blossom forth with a tribute to the biodiversity and beauty of Richmond’s native plants.
Date/Time: Jul 8 2017, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Richmond, Richmond City HallCost: Free
Visitors are invited to enjoy the floral display as well as a series of musical performances, educational talks and family-friendly activities that will activate the Plaza during the installation period.
The majority of species featured in the Our Home and Native Bloom design are significant both for native pollinators such as bees and butterflies and as constituents of forest understory, bogs, foreshore marshes and shrub lands across Richmond and the lower mainland. Richmond’s island ecology sets the stage for the celebration of intrinsic ecosystem services essential to human and natural environments, such as flood storage, water filtration, temperature mitigation, pollination, carbon storage and soil stabilization.
This native species floral design was selected through an open design charrette competition attended by landscape architecture students and early career professionals in December 2016. The City is pleased to announce the winning design team from the UBC School of Landscape Architecture: Nicole Alden, Patrick Beech, Genevieve Depelteau, John Musil and Allison Tweedie.
Our Home and Native Bloom will officially open on June 1, 2017, and will end in early July with a celebratory plant sale event; all potted plants will be on sale to the public for $1.50, in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary.
Check back for public programming updates to be announced shortly.
This project is a collaboration between the City of Richmond Public Art Program, Engineering Sustainability, Parks Services and Richmond Canada 150.
