Molly Crabapple and Joe Sacco in conversation with Raghu Karnad
“Equal parts Hieronymus Bosch, William S. Burroughs and Cirque du Soleil” – The Guardian
“Sacco is one of the world’s leading exponents of the graphic novel form” – Rachel Cooke
Art, sex, politics and surviving these times – this is what forms the nucleus of Molly Crabapple’s work, whether in the burlesque scene, the trial in Guantanamo Bay or the war zones of Syria. From her bestselling memoir ‘Drawing Blood’ to a collaboration with Jay-Z on the war on drugs, Crabapples work is tough, creative and immersed in the contemporary moment. Based in New York city, she is a contributing editor for Vice and her work is in the permanent collection of the Museum for Modern Art.
Joe Sacco, winner of the 2001 Eisner award is one of the world’s most respected graphic artists. Sacco has the eye of a curious traveler and the nose of an investigative reporter. His brilliant graphic novels ask the difficult questions that most storytellers shy away from, exploring the most complex and emotionally weighted situations. His work has appeared in the world’s leading newspapers and magazines such as the New Yorker, and Charlie Hebdo.
Witness the first meeting of these two creative minds, as they talk with award-winning Indian novelist Raghu Karnad about the role of the artist in these turbulent times.
