Every year we lovingly curate an offering of free programming, including art experiences, workshops and talks with international and local artists
Date/Time: Jul 16 2017, 8:00 am to 11:59 pm
Vancouver, Metro VancouverCost: Free
This year’s offering (full roster and more details to be revealed June 1st) includes:
- A series of interactive art experiences led by acclaimed indigenous Indian artist Bhajju Shyam, who will be the festival’s artist-in-residence. Shyam is looking forward to experiencing Northwest Coast art for the first time, and to meeting with indigenous artists during his stay. If his visual travelogue ‘The London Jungle Book’ which reversed Kipling’s colonial gaze and prompted praise from the late art critic John Berger is anything to go by, his visit promises to yield rich fruit.
- An industry panel featuring Nurjehan Aziz, editor of Mawenzi House, which publishes fresh and diverse writing from Canada; and Dr. Jarrett Martineau, co-founder of Revolutions Per Minute, a global new music platform and record label for contemporary Indigenous music.
- A visual arts exhibition by noted contemporary artist Jin-Me Yoon in the lobby of SFU’s Goldcorp Centre of the Arts in collaboration with the Canada-wide Landmarks 2017 project.
- A workshop on oral storytelling and literature as performance by literary bluesman Arthur Flowers.
- A panel discussion ‘A Tale of Two Markets’ on the future of Chinatown and Punjabi Markets, and the importance of marketplaces that act not only as sites of commerce, but as cultural hubs.
- A public art project for Punjabi Market featuring noted Indigenous artist Susan Point and Indian graphic novelist Orijit Sen has already been unveiled.
Ongoing July 6-15, multiple venues across Metro Vancouver
