Accomplished filmmakers and artists will guide families throughout this hands-on afternoon of storyboarding, drawing, paper cut-outs, soundtrack creation and computer editing.
Animating History is a fun collective creative event that inspires families to illustrate their history. No previous experience with animation or film editing is required. All we ask is that you bring an understanding of your family's immigration history or their movement within Canada; be prepared to tell your stories through animation. Families will work with each other to produce a short film that will be viewed at the end of the afternoon session. Films will be posted online to allow sharing and viewing. A fantastic opportunity to work in a cooperative setting and explore your family history! Presented by MOV and Reel2Reel.

Instructors
Ariel Kirk-Gushowaty is a filmmaker and photo-based artist living in Vancouver BC. A founding member of the Iris Film Collective. She explores experimental film and photography, as well as interactions between analogue and digital media. Ariel KG also works in communities as an artist/mentor for such projects/organizations as Vancouver Stories 125, Kerrisdale Collective Memory, Media Lab at the Richmond Arts Centre, Diverse Voices & Portraits, and R2R. She has a BA in Philosophy and Cinema Studies from the University of Toronto and a Photography Certificate from Langara College. Ariel's work has been shown in Canada and internationally.
Weronika Stepien is a Polish-American interdisciplinary artist who graduated from Emily Carr University’s Film and Video + Integrated Media program in 2009. In 2007 she studied audio visual art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Her artwork incorporates forms of visual storytelling, psychology, and experiments in shape and movement. Weronika’s work has been exhibited in Chicago, Germany, Singapore, and Vancouver. She has been teaching animation to children and youth since 2008.
