Otto Tausk - Conductor
Vadim Gluzman - violin*
Repertoire
- Glinka: Ruslan and Ludmila: Overture
- Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 2 in C-sharp minor*
- Sibelius: Symphony No. 1 in E minor
THE MUSIC:
Often overshadowed by its big brother, the first concerto, Shostakovich’s second work for violin and orchestra shares much of the same complexity, darkness and angst as the first violin concerto, though not as much overtly virtuosic writing, opting for an introspective though still intense tone.
Music Director Designate Maestro Otto Tausk presides his first concert since being named the next VSO Music Director, in a performance that includes the expressive and lyrical first symphony of Jean Sibelius. Though maybe not as developed and complex as later works, Sibelius’s First Symphony was still a stunning and revolutionary achievement, showing many of his Nationalist characteristics and symphonic descriptions of his homeland.
THE ARTISTS:
Otto Tausk is the VSO’s Music Director Designate. In all collaborations he leads, Maestro Tausk energizes those he works with earning him enthusiastic and critical acclaim. He has been Music Director of the Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theatre St Gallen since 2012. He is also a hugely respected musical personality in his native Holland, working with all the major orchestras and composers. Maestro Tausk will take up the baton as VSO Music Director in July of 2018.
Vadim Gluzman’s extraordinary artistry brings to life the glorious violin tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries. Gluzman’s wide repertoire embraces new music and his performances are heard around the world through live broadcasts and a striking catalogue of award-winning recordings. Vadim Gluzman plays the legendary 1690 ‘ex-Leopold Auer’ Stradivari on extended loan to him through the generosity of the Stradivari Society of Chicago.
