- Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius
THE MUSIC:
Elgar’s massive but deeply personal work, based on a Victorian poem by Cardinal John Henry Newman, follows a devout, dying Everyman character (“Gerontius” is a name derived from “Old Man”) on a journey through death to meet his Maker, before being taken to Purgatory with the promise of everlasting life and glory to come. The Dream of Gerontius contains Elgar’s most sublime and evocative writing for orchestra and voice, and is his greatest compositional triumph.
THE ARTISTS:
Maestro Bramwell Tovey is the VSO’s longest-serving Music Director, entering his 18th and final season with the VSO in the 2017/2018 Season. Maestro Tovey’s accomplishments with the VSO, including touring, GRAMMY and Juno Awards, the VSO School of Music, the Orchestral Institute at Whistler, the many Music Education programs, and the artistic successes and growth of the orchestra will be celebrated throughout his final year as VSO Music Director.
Susan Platts, British-born Canadian mezzo-soprano, brings a uniquely rich and wide-ranging voice to concert and recital repertoire for alto and mezzo-soprano. She is particularly esteemed for her performances of Gustav Mahler's works. In May of 2004, as part of the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, world-renowned soprano Jessye Norman chose Ms. Platts as her protégée from 26 international candidates and she has continued to mentor her ever since.
Anthony Dean Griffey, an American tenor, has captured critical and popular acclaim on opera, concert and recital stages around the world. The combination of his beautiful and powerful lyric tenor voice, gift of dramatic interpretation and superb musicianship have earned him the highest praise from critics and audiences alike.
Nathan Berg, a Canadian bass-baritone, is acclaimed as theatrically "cinematic" (ClassiqueNews) with "indisputable stage presence" (ClassiqueInfo) and "impeccable" technique (Opera News), and has had a wide ranging career alternating from his love of song to concert and opera in a vast range of styles and time periods.
