The Desert Bride
La novia del deserto
Panorama | Contemporary World Cinema
The wonderful Paulina García, best actress winner at the 2013 Berlin film festival and a hit with Vancouver audiences that year for her turn in Gloria, stars as Teresa, a maid who has been serving the same family for three decades. When the deteriorating Argentinean economy forces the family to let her go, they find her another job in far-off, desert-like San Juan. While en route to her new position, her bus breaks down in a pilgrimage town, and it is there that she meets "El Gringo" (Claudio Rissi), a charming and gallant travelling salesman, which in turn leads to possibilities she’d never even dreamt of before… Co-writer-directors Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato have crafted a warm-hearted charmer that serves as a superb vehicle for the multi-talented García and sounds a much-needed note of optimism on the cinematic landscape.
"A delicate late-life love story that is also a tale about the empowerment of a woman who has lived her whole life in the shadow of others, The Desert Bride stars Chilean actress Paulina García in a moving, quietly focused performance… [The film] carries itself lightly, charting with grace and sympathy the opening up of a closed bud of a woman when the world with which she is familiar falls from under her… A small delight, a perfect cinematic short story.—Lee Marshall, Screen
