The Square
Panorama | Special Presentations
In this Palme d’Or-winning satire from Force Majeure director Ruben Östlund, Claes Bang plays Christian, a clean-shaven, Prius-driving curator of a contemporary art museum in Stockholm. Around the same time he acquires the installation of the title—a 4x4-metre zone wherein we "all share equal rights and obligations"—Christian’s phone and wallet are stolen, along with some precious inherited cufflinks. While he’s out tracking the culprit—an escapade that takes him outside the utopian space of the gallery—a couple of outsourced nincompoops are back at the office devising a controversial ad campaign for The Square’s grand opening that will land our protagonist in even hotter water.
Without sacrificing his dark and biting sense of humour, the always rambunctious Östlund endeavours to ask pressing moral questions using the drollest of manners. Can art save the world? Are people less likely to help a victim when others are present? And are high-art patrons really only there to devour the complimentary smorgasbord?
"Ruben Östlund truly anoints himself with The Square, an excoriating razor-burn of a movie that deploys drollery like an instrument of torture."—Jessica Kiang, The Playlist
