An activist author recovering from a head injury campaigns to stop off-shore millionaires from buying up local property only to learn that her neighbor is a “satellite kid”—a lonely, vulnerable teenager from China left to fend for himself in a monster house by his business-like mother—a realtor from Beijing. Others connected to the campaigning author include her husband, a police officer madly in love with their realtor, and a corrupt city administrator who accepts the ultimate bribe to keep foreign money pouring in. This play is a dark comedy about betrayal and loneliness in a city that has started to lose its identity, where characters orbit each other looking for connection and ultimately, love. This is an existential play about place and people; and most importantly about Vancouver’s continuing housing crisis. This dark comedy is by award-winning playwright and author Aaron Bushkowsky. It is inspired by Caroline Adderson’s book on Vancouver’s vanishing heritage homes, Vancouver Vanishes.
