Presented as a series of monologues exploring each character’s relationship to the crime, an unnamed character known only as the Collector embodies seven people on the fringes of the murder as he struggles to make sense of a gruesome act provoked by a seemingly innocent gesture. The play invites the audience to search through the confusing and chaotic implications of this death to find their own humanity.
“A play’s premiere is like a birth. My Funny Valentine is a beautiful baby.” —Colin Thomas, the Georgia Straight
“An exceptionally beautiful piece of work…meticulously scripted characters shot through with contradictions…simply superb.” —Jo Ledingham, Vancouver Courier
“Considering the subject matter, My Funny Valentine has more laughs than you’d expect [but] sadly, Deveau’s play is likely to remain topical for years to come.” —Mark Leiren-Young, The Vancouver Sun
