Following the announcement of winners from the 2016 Alcuin Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada, we are pleased to present the following panel discussion:
The Handmade Tale: Book Arts in the Dystopian Present
Mike Hepher (Fernie, BC), Clawhammer Press
Erica Wilk (Vancouver), Moniker Press
Sylvana d’Angelo (Vancouver), Zine Club
moderated by Jon Bath, University of Saskatchewan
Why, in the era of iPhones and Kindles, would anyone choose to make books by hand? This panel will explore how the traditional book arts have been impacted by the digital revolution, how digital technologies have been integrated into the practices of the book arts, and what it means to be a hand printer in the 21st century.
Moderator Jon Bath is leader of a SSHRC-funded research project on “The Post-Digital Book Arts” which is both gathering and presenting the perspectives of artists and craftspeople and experimenting with various forms of post-digital book arts.
