Improv has become one of the hottest skill sets directors search for in Vancouver but getting in the door is not enough. Using evocative text work, improv techniques, and direct feedback, Nikolai will help you isolate your strengths and weaknesses as an actor-improvisor and give you the tools to take your performance to the next level - whether that's auditioning for your favourite improv troupe/show or auditioning for Kevin Smith.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Working with both theatre and film/tv sides, students will come to understand the three responsibilities of the actor and how they can be used to jumpstart connection and purpose on stage.
- Students will understand the key behind text work and be given Nikolai's personal tricks on how to do it effectively on their own time to make them "director-proof" when they're in the audition room.
- Students will experience how to use personal experience as inspiration in both improvised and text-based acting work in a safe and conscious way. Mining personal moments of inspiration to create meaningful choices both on and off stage.
- Students will gain tricks, experience, and confidence performing cold-reads in front of both peers directors (for auditions on both stage and screen).

a bit about the instructor:
Nikolai Witschl is a working actor, improvisor, writer and current school director of Instant Theatre. His most recent film and tv credits include Deadpool 2, The Women of Marwen (with Steve Carrell and directed by Robert Zemeckis), Supergirl (with Kevin Smith) and Guillermo Del Toro’s The Strain. He is a graduate of the BFA Acting program at the University of Alberta and an alumni of Rapid Fire Theatre. You can currently see him performing in Instant Theatre MainStage shows such as The Outer-Middle Zone and Shakespeare after Dark.
