Toots was one of the only musicians to have a successful career as a jazz harmonica player. His whistling and harmonica playing was heard on Old Spicecommercials in the 1960s. In 2009, Toots was given the highest U.S. honor that can be accorded to a jazz musician, the distinction of "Jazz Master," by The National Endowment for the Arts.
