The theme for this year’s forum is, “Called to Lead.” We will learn about leadership. We will learn about the process of innovative and entrepreneurial thinking, how to think of the process of creating change.
Who will drive the process? You. Me. All of us. We are all called to lead if we have a biblical worldview. To lead is to have influence. That interest in leading is enhanced because it is part of our calling. We are all called to lead. We must pursue that calling. That is how we make a difference. This is how we create meaning.
Clarity of calling is a powerful testimony to others. We believe that there must be a “caller”—that is the divine spark within us. God calls us with his purposes; we don’t craft our own calling. We have a unique and specific purpose.
In the Old Testament the Israelites were the “chosen people”; in the New Testament all believers are the “called people.” You are one of the called. Each person is called by God to a unique and specific task that should form the compass of their existence, provide a sense of meaning and lead to being on purpose in both life and work.
We sometimes hear the term that a person did something “on purpose”—in other words, with clear intent and to achieve a certain outcome. For the called, every action should flow intentionally. You are to be a steward of your opportunities within the bookends of your life. The anchor, the central feature of any Christian, should be their clear sense of calling.
A clear sense of calling is like a personal vision and mission statement: what am I aspiring to and how will I get there? Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges in Lead Like Jesus, note that “Purpose is bigger than any achievement. Your personal purpose is your calling—the reason you were created.” Lack of clarity will lead to diminished effectiveness and impact.
There are two aspects of calling. First, there is the general call of all Christians to follow the dictates of Christ, biblical principles and a life worthy of the calling. As Paul notes in 2 Tim 1:9, “He has saved us and called us to a holy life…” Second, there is the specific and personal call of each Christian. We have each been uniquely and specifically called based on various factors. What is your gifting? God does not call that to which we are not suited. What is your temperament? God does not call people who do not have the proper disposition.
A clear understanding of this two-fold call is vital to an individual understanding their meaning in life. Each person has been gifted in a particular way and this is typically tied into their passion. They truly gifted are genuinely passionate, whether they are a musician or are a high-tech entrepreneur.
Called people engage in purposeful activity. The Bible notes that when we are running the race set before us we can then lay aside distractions from various “weights” to “sin which so easily ensnares us.” (Heb 12:1). People who are not clear on their calling do not spend their time wisely. They spend their time on urgent and unimportant items; by contrast, those clear on their calling spend their time on non-urgent and important items.
How does work fit into calling? Work, which typically occupies much of people’s time and bandwidth, is not your calling. Your two-fold calling is the box within which work fits. Your general call provides a broad framework of the responsibilities of every Christian. Your specific call ties into your specific activities, of which work is a large portion but not the dominant portion.
The bottom line, however, is that every Christian needs to have a clear understanding of calling—and be living it on a daily basis—in order to reach their God-given potential. The goal of every believer should be “to walk worthy of the calling” to which they have been called.” (Eph 4:1-6). We don’t want to be like King Jehoram, who reigned for eight years, and “to no one’s sorrow, departed.” (2 Chronicles 21:20).
With clear focus, much can be accomplished. Dwight L Moody, the US evangelist of the late 1800s, said on calling that, “The world has yet to see what a man fully consecrated to God can do. I aim to be that man.” He certainly lived on purpose. By being on purpose each individual can faithfully steward the opportunities of their lives.
By end of this forum, you will have greater clarity around your calling. This will enhance your effectiveness. We should not simply desire to be leaders—but rather understand that we are called to lead!
VANCOUVER 2017 - WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR!
The support of many people has helped establish the Vancouver ELO event as the premier gathering for Christian marketplace and entrepreneurial leaders each year. In the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship, we wish to continually improve our ELO events. As a result of extensive consultation with ELO advisors and supporters, we have instituted the changes below for 2017.
1. Referred to as a “Forum” rather than “Conference”. This actually goes back to the original name used in 2005. The purpose is to highlight the interaction of attendees with speakers and the fact that all speakers are “live and in person.” In addition, a moderator will do a Q & A with each speaker and there will be questions from the audience. This is important to highlight ELO as quite different than a videocast or mass market event.
2. Annual Theme – “Called To Lead!” We will have a specific theme for each year’s event. The theme for this year’s Forum is, “Called to Lead.” We will learn about leadership. We will learn about the process of innovative and entrepreneurial thinking, how to think of the process of creating change. Who will drive the process? All of us. We are all called to lead if we have a biblical worldview. To lead is to have influence. That interest in leading is enhanced because it is part of our calling. This theme will be interwoven throughout the event
3. “ELO Student Scholarships.” ELO will provide a limited number of scholarships for university students (aged 25 and below) to attend the event. We have been doing this “informally” for a number of years as various ELO advisors provide tickets that are made available to students. We will now be more deliberate about getting the word out publicly regarding “ELO Student Scholarships” (NOTE: anyone interested in a scholarship can email ELO at info@entrepreneurialleaders.com). The ELO Student Scholarships will be offered at the discretion of ELO and according to availability.
4. “ELO Young Leaders Scholarships.” In order to encourage younger leaders to attend the ELO events, ELO will provide a 50% discount for afternoon tickets for people aged 35 and under. So, the price is reduced from $299 down to $149. (NOTE: anyone interested in a scholarship can email ELO at info@entrepreneurialleaders.com).
5. End A Bit Earlier. We have tweaked the format so that the event ends at 9:30 p.m. rather than 9:45 / 10:00 p.m. We will cut 30 minutes as follows: start at 6:45 p.m. rather than 7:00 p.m. and we will shorten the dessert break by 15 minutes. Some people travel quite a distance to locally attend the events and this time saving will be meaningful.
6. “Entrepreneur Pitch.” This will be a 5-minute slot during the afternoon session in which we invite an entrepreneur to “pitch” their product or service. In essence, we want to give early stage/ start-up entrepreneurs an opportunity to introduce themselves to our ELO community. The intent is not for them to raise money (or to present a specific financial opportunity), but rather look to make connections which might be helpful with respect to mentoring, resources and connections. Ideally, these will be young entrepreneurs ELO can help get a leg up through exposure to an experienced and supportive community. Maybe it’s a new app or bit of software or what may appear to be some crazy idea! We could likely fit in up to 3 of these pitches. This will depend upon the quality of submissions and time availability. (NOTE: Interested parties can request further details from ELO at info@entrepreneurialleaders.com).
7. Forum Booklet. The Entrepreneurial Leaders Review (the magazine distributed at each event) (9” x 12”) will be combined with the notetaking booklet (given out separately at the event) (also, 9” x 12”) into a new 5” x 8” format. This booklet will be approximately 100 pages, with a hard spine, with more content, will provide ample room for note taking. This booklet will be provided at no cost to all attendees.
