M I X E D playfully explores the confusing world of being caught between cultures. Performed and created by new media/performance artist Sammy Chien, dancer/choreographer Scheherazaad Cooper, and musician/composer Tarun Nayar, this piece is a daring interdisciplinary exploration of its creators’ experiences as multi-racial, multi-heritage Canadians, from mixed cultures. The performance includes live music, dance, and visuals, interconnecting each performer by live digital and interactive elements—visuals to music, projections to the moving body, and improvised movement to improvised music—all in real- time! Instead of a ‘celebration of diversity’, M I X E D is a festival of complexity, acknowledging that ‘who we are’ is constantly interconnected and mutually evolving, in relation with the current sociopolitical status quo and the progress of decolonization in which we seek to continually to question and provoke.
