Wu Zetian (624-705 AD) was the first and only empress in Chinese history. She ruled the Tang Dynasty in its prosperity. Her achievements included expanding territory, constructing great long-vanished buildings and bronze castings as well as placing Buddhism over Taoism as the state religion, drawing talented people into her reign and developing agriculture. Although Wu was a competent monarch in terms of her achievements, she was extremely cruel and merciless, murdering her relatives who had intentions to take over her position or fatally eliminating those who opposed her. Wu is viewed as both pro and con, by honouring her historical contributions and by rejecting her ruthless performance.
