By author Oliver Goldsmith this beloved comedy about love and mistaken identity revolves around Charles Marlow, a young bachelor who brims with confidence when dallying with working-class women but becomes a shivering bundle of nerves in the presence of high-born ladies. When Marlow unexpectedly runs into, Kate, the woman his father wants him to marry, he’s so terrified, he can’t even look at her. So Kate decides to don the unthreatening guise of a barmaid, stooping in social status to conquer his heart.
Charles Marlow sets out for Mr. Hardcastle's manor to meet his daughter Kate; with a friend, George Hastings, an admirer of Miss Constance Neville, who also lives with the Hardcastles. A practical joke sends them to the Hardcastle’s home - believing it to be an Inn. Marlow prefers lower class women, finding them less intimidating than women of high society. On his first acquaintance with Kate, the later realizes she will have to pretend to be 'common' to get Marlow to woo her. Thus Kate 'stoops to conquer'.
She Stoops to Conquer adapted by Joan Bryans
