It's been over a month since a series of sexual assault accusations began to circulate about a number of prominent individuals in the Vancouver music scene, and on an international level, with many public figures being named. The media (and social media) frenzy surrounding this has subsided somewhat, but the underlying issues remain to be dealt with.
The Red Gate Arts Society has been dealing with these issues since long before this situation exploded onto the front pages, primarily from the point of view of our own responsibilities as venue operators, but also with an understanding that it's an issue with the entire scene, involving promoters, performers, venues, and individuals attending shows.
We believe that these toxic behaviours are endemic to our entire culture and that the process of identifying and eradicating them will be a long and difficult process that has only just begun.
We also believe that the independent, self- organized cultural spaces and groups are in the best position, and therefore have the greatest responsibility, to establish some basic standards and protocols for dealing with these issues.
The agenda will be set and announced ahead of time, but we welcome any input on topics through our website, Facebook page, or by completing a short survey: https://surveynuts.com/surveys/take?id=154995&c=3899674217PPFN
