Brahms struggled mightily with the idea of writing a symphony in the wake of Beethoven’s Ninth, feeling that music had been perfected in that great work. He finally worked up the courage after twenty years of delay; and his Symphony No. 1 was worth the wait, a stunning symphonic statement that in many ways picked up where Beethoven left off.
Dvořák’s Cello Concerto is perhaps the best-loved of the “big five” cello concerti, a beautiful work that is not consumed by flashy solo parts, but seamlessly and brilliantly integrates the cello and orchestra into a dynamic, lyrical and rewarding dialogue.
THE ARTISTS:
Otto Tausk is the VSO’s Music Director Designate.In all collaborations he leads, Maestro Tausk energizes those he works with earning him enthusiastic and critical acclaim. He has been Music Director of the Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theatre St Gallen since 2012. He is also a hugely respected musical personality in his native Holland, working with all the major orchestras and composers. Maestro Tausk will take up the baton as VSO Music Director in July of 2018.

Harriet Krijgh has performed to critical and audience acclaim at the Vancouver Recital Society, and recently made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Boston Symphony, to rave reviews. The twenty-six year old cellist is one of today’s most exciting and promising young talents, and her grace and expressiveness touch her audiences as soon as she steps on the concert stage.
