Internationally-renowned Argentinian pianist Ingrid Fliter performs Nights in the Gardens of Spain, a series of “symphonic impressions” – as de Falla himself described them – for piano and orchestra.
Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole was one of his first major orchestral works, and has been praised for its fresh orchestration and evocative colours, reflecting Ravel’s own Spanish heritage. The concert climaxes with Ravel’s sensuous ode to musical absurdity, the wildly-popular Boléro. Described by the composer as “a piece for orchestra without music” Bolero through the years has exerted an unshakable hold on the imagination of countless concertgoers. An exercise in crescendo, Bolero teases and feints, offering one unfulfilled crescendo after another while constantly building toward the final shattering climax.
THE ARTISTS:
Jun Märkl has long been known as a highly respected interpreter of the core Germanic repertoire from both the symphonic and operatic traditions, and more recently for his refined and idiomatic explorations of the French impressionists. His long-standing relationships at the state operas of Vienna, Berlin, Munich and Semperoper Dresden have in recent years been complemented by his Music Directorships of the Orchestre National de Lyon (2005-11) and MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig (to 2012).
Ingrid Fliter sprang to international attention when she was awarded the 2006 Gilmore Artist Award, one of only a handful of pianists to have received this honour. The Gilmore Artist Award is presented to an exceptional pianist who, regardless of age or nationality, possesses profound musicianship and charisma and who sustains a career as a major international concert artist.
