šxʷʔam̓ət (home) will look at reconciliation in human terms. What does reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians REALLY mean? What are the human blockages, the patterns of behaviour, that get in our way and how can we overcome them? šxʷʔam̓ət (home) will be created and performed by Indigenous and non-Indigenous people living these issues.
Despite the various levels of government attempts to promote reconciliation, we know that actual behavioural change cannot be legislated. Sadly, it still seems that in many cases on the ground, our communities are not necessarily ready to embrace reconciliation. So, how does it manifest between different communities, within our families, inside the psyche of our Nation? And in Metro Vancouver in particular?
We at Theatre for Living believe that the exploration of true reconciliation needs to tap into a deeper level of understanding beyond proclamations, opinion columns and flipchart lectures. Theatre is a symbolic, metaphoric language. This is one of the reasons it is so powerful. Theatre helps us shed light on our behaviours; it embodies our emotions and deepest thoughts in a safe way. Because of this, it has the potential to create real transformation at both human and systemic levels. šxʷʔam̓ət (home) will invite audiences to change the patterns of behaviour inside the characters who are struggling with these issues – patterns that audience members recognize inside themselves – and in this way, rehearse true reconciliation.
