Take a guided tour of eye-catching paintings from India and the stories they’re inspired by!

Join Surrey Art Gallery curator Jordan Strom for an informal introduction to the artworks in the groundbreaking exhibition Many Visions, Many Versions: Art from Indigenous Communities in India. This is the first major presentation of indigenous paintings from India to be shown across North America, and Surrey Art Gallery is the only stop in Canada.

The paintings and drawings in Many Visions, Many Versions draw you in with their bold colours, rich patterns, and impressive size. Strom will guide you to discover the differences expressed in the artworks made by four distinct and prolific indigenous communities in India while also exploring universal themes that connect the works.

Originally produced as wall paintings in domestic and communal settings, the artworks come alive when their stories unfold. The pictures are exuberant expressions of daily life, stories of origin, and religious and political beliefs, filled with human emotion ranging from humorous to tragic. Examples include how the world began, the motifs of floods and trees of life; scenes celebrating nature (animals, gardens); paintings of village life (wedding rituals, dancing, fishing, farming); and contemporary events, often depicted with traditional imagery, like the 2004 tsunami in South Asia and the 9/11 terrorist attack on the United States.

This particular exhibition tour is a great way to be introduced to contemporary art, and answers the question of what makes art contemporary. Both regular tour participants and first-time Gallery visitors are encouraged to ask questions and share their responses to the artworks.
