From the first time A-WA took the stage they’ve been dropping jaws, raising eyebrows and making people dance. With the three singing sisters is four of Israel’s best musicians on bass/violin, drum/loops, keyboard, and electric guitar.
To tell the story of A-WA, we have to go a few years back, to a musical Yemenite Jewish family who lives in the small village Shaharut in southern Israel. Not too far from the Egyptian border.
“Our grandparents immigrated from Yemen to Israel. That migration brought a lot of beautiful traditions to Israel: dance, music, and colourful ceremonies. With us, it is the women who sing, in the special Arabic dialect of the Yemeni Jews. We started to mix those foundations with the music of our own generation: hip hop, reggae, and electronica. So we have taken something from our family roots and given it a modern, fresh twist. It is both old and very much alive!”
For the last two years they have been performing non-stop. They became an integral part of the stage composition of Balkan Beat Box’s MINIMAL tour and with their own band have performed all over Israel, in festivals in Poland and France, the 2015 Womex Festival and this year in North America where they kick off their Spring tour with Chutzpah!.
A-WA sends a refreshing and authentic breeze of world music to the music scene in Israel and abroad.
Trust us when we say you will not want to miss A-WA at the Biltmore Cabaret!
