You’ll see exhibits in a range of media—from photography and paintings to sculpture and cedar weavings at Griffin Art Projects, Polygon Gallery, and Gordon Smith Gallery. Ages 16+. Bring a bag lunch or pick something up from Lonsdale Quay.
Led by Surrey Art Gallery Curator Jordan Strom and Assistant Curator Rhys Edwards, participants will meet at Surrey Art Gallery for an orientation over coffee before hitting the road. First on the itinerary is Griffin Art Projects, a space that presents exhibitions of contemporary art from private collections. Their exhibit Modernism in Iran: 1958-1978 shows significant works from influential artists of this period, bringing a contemporary lens to an important period of experimentation and innovation.
The next stop is The Polygon Gallery, formerly Presentation House Gallery, which just opened last November and is billed as Western Canada’s largest photography-focused gallery. They have extended their inaugural exhibition N. Vancouver that presents existing and specially commissioned works, primarily in photography, that reflect the immediate surroundings of the Gallery's new home in North Vancouver along Lonsdale Quay. More than fifteen regional artists are in the show, including Jeff Wall, Myfanwy MacLeod, and Greg Girard.
After lunch, the last stop will be the Gordon Smith Gallery where participants will tour the teaching exhibition Memory, History, Story. See sculpture, textile, cedar carvings, weavings, and two-dimensional artworks from Aboriginal and Inuit artists from the Artists for Kids permanent collection, including George Littlechild, Jane Ash Poitras, Xwalacktun, Kenojuak Ashevak, Robert Davidson, Beau Dick and others.
