In 2012, a young woman was gang raped by six men inside a moving bus in New Delhi. Later she died from the injuries endured. In Deepa Mehta’s latest film, eleven actors collaborate on a fictional dramatization of the lives of the rapists. She omits the brutal rape itself, but rather challenges the actors to explore the backstories of the characters involved. The film interrogates the mentality that fuels male entitlement over women and their bodies, and examines the circumstances that enable them.
Feature followed by panel discussion with special guests Raji Mangat, Director of Litigation at West Coast Leaf, and writer/ producer, Petie Chalifoux (River of Silence).
Raji Mangat Bio:
At the core of Raji’s wide-ranging legal career is a commitment to using the law as a tool for positive transformation. Prior to joining West Coast LEAF, Raji practiced constitutional and administrative law. Her work was focused on sentencing reform, the impact of detention on women, civil forfeiture, and election law. Raji consults on a range of research and advocacy projects for large and small international non-profit organizations. She teaches an upper-level course on constitutional law and civil liberties at the University of Victoria, Faculty of Law. Raji served as a law clerk to the Hon. Frank Iacobucci at the Supreme Court of Canada. She received her law degree from the University of Victoria and holds a BA from the University of British Columbia and an MA from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University. Outside of work, Raji likes to make paper crafts, binge on Netflix, and meander along city streets in search of coffee.
Petie Chalifoux Bio:
I am a Cree filmmaker from Northern Alberta. I have chosen to be a filmmaker because it is a powerful and creative medium to shed light upon the realities of the social issues that surround the world we live in today from an Indigenous perspective. The first short dramatic film I wrote and produced is titled “The Shifter”, a film that speaks to reclaiming power for an Indigenous woman. The Shifter screened at the American Indian Film Festival in San Francisco as well as the LA Skins Film Festival in Los Angeles, California in November 2015. Since the making of The Shifter I have since written and produced a feature length film titled “River Of Silence”. With this film I hope to bring a worldwide awareness to the issue of murdered and missing Indigenous women and violence against all women.
