In 1844, 26-year-old Karl Marx (August Diehl) and his wife Jenny (Vicky Krieps) are living in exile in Paris. Indebted and troubled by an existential crisis, he meets the slightly younger Friedrich Engels (Stefan Konarske), son of a factory owner. Although Marx at first dismisses him as a member of the privileged upper class, the two impetuous young men become friends, and inspire each other to write texts that lay the theoretical foundation for a revolution.
As you would expect from Peck this is a film of ideas, charged with the electricity of precipitous change.
"It shouldn’t work, but it does, due to the intelligence of the acting and the stamina and concentration of the writing and directing… Somehow the spectacle of fiercely angry people talking about ideas becomes absorbing and even gripping." Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
"This spry romp has charm and verve." Lee Marshall, Screen Daily
