All proceeds from the evening go directly to the Unist'ot'en Camp in Northern BC and, in particular, to the building of the Healing ?Lodge at the Camp. The Unist'ot'en Camp stands directly in the way of numerous proposed fossil fuel pipelines - both tar sands oil and fracked gas. The following is an excerpt from the "Unist'ot'en Declaration", issued in 2015 in the face of stepped up pressure from the pipeline companies and the RCMP:
"The Unist'ot'en Settlement Camp is not a protest or a demonstration. Our Clan is occupying and using our traditional territory as it has for centuries. Our free, prior and informed consent protocol is in place at the entrance of our territory as an expression of our jurisdiction and our inherent right to both give and refuse consent and entry into our territory. Wet'suwet'en territory, including Unist'ot'en territory, is unceded, unsurrendered and untreatied. Our traditional Indigenous legal systems remain intact and continue to govern our people and our lands. All activities, development and actions undertaken by government or industry within Unist'ot'en territory must be consented to by the Unist'ot'en Clan. The Unist'ot'en Settlement and Camp is a peaceful expression of our connection to Unist'ot'en territory."
?The Healing Lodge
The Healing? Lodge makes it clear that the Unist'ot'en Camp is so much more than a bulwark against unwanted industrial incursions into Unist'ot'en Territory. It is a place of learning and healing. With a focus on Indigenous youth, it combines exposure to the natural environment and traditional skills?, language and culture with personal counselling. People are able to stay at the Healing? Lodge and participate in? the maintenance of the Territory and restoration of the forests. As the Unist'ot'en say, "Heal the land, heal the people".
In 2015 the first phase of the Healing ?Lodge was completed, comprising a commercial kitchen, a dining hall, and additional spaces. This sturdy, 2,200 square foot building? was constructed entirely by volunteers at ?a ?cost of approximately $45,000. In May this year, work will begin on Phase 2. This will include counselling rooms, meeting rooms, and offices. (Phase 3 - coming in 2017 - will add to the residential capacity of the Healing ?Lodge).
So enjoy yourself to the sounds of Five Alarm Funk?, ?T?he Boom Booms and? ?Jack Garton's Demon Squadron and know that you are standing together with the Unist'ot'en in protecting their land and strengthening their people.
