In Search of the Arctic Fox – Christopher Wright author of Arctic Cargo
After Amundsen’s successful East to West transit of the Northwest Passage between 1903 and 1906, interest in the route waned. However, the Hudson’s Bay Company saw great opportunity to expand their trading activities from fur bearing animals of the Boreal Forest to the Arctic Fox, a denizen of the northern tundra.
Christopher Wright is the retired President of The Mariport Group Ltd, a specialized marine and port consulting company formed in 1989. He has spoken regularly on Arctic issues, or moderated panel discussions, at Arctic conferences as well as meetings hosted by the Company of Master Mariners, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the Canadian Hydrographic Association and the Canadian Transportation Research Forum. In 2016 he published Arctic Cargo; A History of Marine Transportation in Canada’s North. He is currently working on a new book on the history of polar cruising.
His presentation will draw on research for Arctic Cargo and look at what was happening in the Western Arctic prior to the St Roch’s 1940-42 transit of the NWP, activity during WWII, the status of the passage today, and potential for increasing transits, particularly by expedition vessels.
This speaker series is free with museum admission. Arrive early and climb aboard the historic St. Roch.
