Co.ERASGA in partnership with The Dance Centre presents EXchanges 2018. Workshop and Informal Showing with Montréal's Gabriel Dharmoo
This vocal improvisation workshop aims to awaken a variety of unheard sounds that sleep deep in your throat. Your voice will resonate with that of other participants, as you participate in various vocal exploration exercises, follow an intuitive choral conducting method specifically designed for non-musicians. Anyone curious to explore the full potential of their vocal instrument is welcome; no formal musical training necessary. A community-building, artistic, liberating, playful, unexpected and bizarre workshop!
Dharmoo’s work utilizes and accesses the voice to explore differences between tradition and novelty, bringing academic and theoretical rigour to the performance space. This edition of EXchanges will consist of a 5 day workshop where participants will be invited to practice awakening their voice through techniques from Gabriel’s research, and will culminate in an informal showing on Saturday, October 13 that will be open to the public. All are welcome to participate, no previous performance or voice experience is necessary!
There is a capacity of 20 participants; spots are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Info on how to reserve below.
Co.ERASGA's EXchanges series offers training opportunities and dialogue between national and international artists and the Vancouver dance community; offering opportunities for creative exchange, discussion and unique training experiences that both strengthen and broaden the practice of performing arts and professional contemporary dance in our local community.
Biography:
After studying with Éric Morin at Université Laval, Gabriel Dharmoo completed studies in composition and analysis at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal with Serge Provost, graduating with two "Prix avec grande distinction", the highest honour to be awarded. His works have been performed in Canada, the U.S.A, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Poland, Australia, Singapore and South Africa. He was awarded the Canada Council for the Arts Jules Léger (2017) and Robert Fleming Prize (2011), the MusCan Student Composer Competition (2017), the SOCAN Jan V. Matejcek Award (2016), the Fernand-Lindsay Prix d'Europe composition prize (2011) as well as 6 prizes from the SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers. Gabriel is an associate composer at the Canadian Music Centre as well as a member of SOCAN and the Canadian League of Composers. Inspired by contrasting vocal expressions in different cultures in time and space, he conceives his voice as both a raw and a sophisticated instrument. His musical language is a blend of diverse classical, avant-garde and traditional elements, mediated by an interest in linguistics and ethno/zoomusicology.
