Drop in to create, explore, and enjoy art with friends and family!
Date/Time: Oct 14 2018, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm

Take part in hands-on artmaking and an interactive musical yarn and dance performance on the theme “Tactile Textiles." Everyone is welcome at this free drop-in event—children must be with an adult.
Inspired by the Gallery’s fall exhibits, this upcoming Family Sunday celebrates the ordinary and extraordinary world of textiles. Cotton, silk, wool, nylon, and polyester are a few types of textiles or fabrics created out of natural or synthetic fibres. These materials are around us every day—from the clothes we wear to the sheets we sleep in and artists use this material to create beautiful works of art.
Artmaking Activities
Interactive Art Book:
On arrival, create an interactive art book with a woven cover. You can bring with you to record your discoveries throughout the day! Among the many artworks you’ll see in the galleries are a man’s suit cut up to look like a spider, a map of Canada in the form of a quilt, and a stuffed sculpture of dark matter in the universe.
Fabric Collage, Pom-pom, and Clay Artworks:
Make your own fabric artworks with exhibiting artists! Elizabeth Carefoot will use her years of experience playing with textiles to help you create your own art monster fabric collage. You'll also have the opportunity to fashion your own colourful pom-poms inspired by Kathy Slade’s giant Orange pom-pom. This artwork celebrates do-it-yourself culture. In our classrooms, experiment with patterns and textures in clay as you press different fabrics onto your designs.
Fibre Forest:
Fuzzy or coarse, smooth or slippery, there are so many textures created from fibres. At the entrance to the main gallery, touch and add your woven, braided, or knotted fabric piece to a fibre forest. This fibre forest is on a giant loom and inhabited with trees, salmon, and creeks. It includes recycled and upcycled fabrics. Artists Roxanne Charles and Debbie Westergaard Tuepah created this installation called Bearing Witness. It honours the interdependency of forests, wildlife, and people while celebrating the power of collaboration in protecting our environment.
Performance:
At 12pm, 1pm, or 2:30pm, join an interactive performance called Tricoter in the Studio Theatre. This performance invites you to move as yarn gets tangled in a large knot of bright colours. Meredith Kalaman dances while Meredith Bates plays viola (from the group Foolish Operations). Pick up your free tickets on arrival to reserve your spot.
