This new music concert runs the gamut of tragically serious to that verging on ridiculous, all conducted by VSO Associate Conductor Gordon Gerrard. The program begins with John Rea’s Accident (Tombeau de Grisey), alluding to Gerard Grisey’s Partiels and Wagner’s funeral music from Act III of Tristan und Isolde. Following this is Alice Ho’s brooding Dark Waters; Jordan Nobles’ ethereal Equilibrium invites soloistic work from every member of the ensemble; and Judith Weir’s Musicians Wrestle Everywhere, a light-hearted piece inspired by the non-musical noises of everyday life. Closing the concert is maverick composer Frederick Rzewski’s Les Moutons de Panurge – a frenetic attempt at keeping every player in exact unison despite wriggling melodies, constant meter changes, and audience participation!
