Composed by Pietro Mascagni at the age of 27, this opera was written over an eight-day period, breaking new ground and ushering in the era of verismo. Set in a Sicilian village, sad Santuzza is looking for her lover Turridu, who betrayed her with his former fiancée, Lola, now married to the wealthy Alfio. Mad with jealousy, she tells the cuckolded husband about the affair, sealing Turridu’s fate when Alfio provokes him to a duel.
Opera Opulenza was founded by artistic director, Trudy Chalmers in 2014. Since then, performances have spanned the worlds of chanson, opera, lieder and sacred music. The company’s aim is to inspire and educate communities – singers, musicians and audiences – with productions both on and off the ‘beaten path’.
