Our season ends with another King Henry play; this time, about King Henry II, who imprisons his wife Eleanor in the tower because of her frequent attempts to overthrow him. With Eleanor out of the way, he can savour his dalliances with his young mistress. But Eleanor is not to be trifled with. Working through her sons, she plots the king's demise and the rise of her second and preferred son, Richard, to the throne. The youngest son, John – the only son holding his father's affection – is the king's choice for successor. But John is also overly eager for power and is willing to plot his father's demise with middle brother, Geoffrey, and the young king of France, Phillip. Engrossing and thrilling, this epic drama shows us that the bonds of family are weak indeed when ultimate power is at stake.
