Drummer Kelby MacNayr’s first memories of jazz came from a mysterious bootleg cassette simply called Wynton Marsalis, with all other information in Japanese. Years later, MacNayr learned the music was Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers featuring Wynton Marsalis and the 1980 incarnation of the band live at Bubba’s. The music was strong, propulsive, and dynamic. A life-long love affair with the spirit and magic of Art Blakey was born.
For this special concert celebrating centennial of Art’s birth and the timeless spirit and of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, the renowned drummer MacNayr assembles an All-Star band featuring five of the West Coast’s top jazz musicians performing music spanning 50 years of music.
With Brad Turner trumpet, Cory Weeds tenor saxophone, John Hansen piano, and Michael Glynn bass.
