SEX is the second of our 2019 Censored! Forbidden Classics of the Wicked Stage reading series, looking at banned classics spanning 2300 years of history, all addressing still-controversial themes of women's sexual and financial agency.
Sit back and enjoy--or get more engaged by reading supporting roles with City Stage New West's professional actors, adding sound effects, or taking part in intermission activities and post-reading discussions. Talk-backs with experts and artists will discuss the plays, their impact, and their censorship. Cash bar will stock a Mae West-themed drink. A great night out!
Mae West's SEX was a smash hit on Broadway but landed West in jail for obscenity and corruption, launching her legendary, controversial, ground-breaking career. An ad for the 1927 show warned, "If you cannot stand excitement, see your doctor before visiting Mae West."
